James I. Healy, M.D., Ph.D., Chairman of the Board

Dr. Healy is Managing Director of Sofinnova. Prior to joining Sofinnova, Dr. Healy had experience with both pharmaceutical products and research platforms. He held a manufacturing position at Bayer Pharmaceuticals and helped lead the discovery group at Ista Pharmaceuticals prior to its initial public offering. Previously, Dr. Healy was involved with the Human Genome Center at Lawrence Berkeley Labs and, through a later collaboration with Affymetrix, helped design, test and then publish on the first murine gene chips. Dr. Healy began his private equity career at Sanderling. He earned a BA in Molecular Biology and a BA in Scandinavian Studies from the University of California at Berkeley. He received his MD from Stanford School of Medicine and earned his PhD in Immunology from Stanford University. Dr. Healy is an author of numerous research articles and reviews including three papers published in Nature.

Dennis Henner, Ph.D., Director

Dr. Dennis Henner is a General Partner at MPM Capital. Dr. Henner joined MPM's San Francisco office in May 2001. Prior to joining MPM, Dr. Henner was at Genentech from 1981 to 2001. He was the Senior Vice President of Research at Genentech and a member of the Executive Committee, Product Review Committee, and Research Review Committee. During his tenure, he oversaw the development of numerous products that have been fundamental to the success of Genentech, including novel antibody products such as Herceptin. Dr. Henner is currently Director of Cellerant Therapeutics, Inc., Ceregene, Inc., Kalobios, Inc., Rinat Neuroscience Corporation, Synergia and Tercica, Inc (NASDAQ:TRCA). He received his Ph.D. from the Department of Microbiology at the University of Virginia and did postgraduate training at the Scripps Clinic and Research Foundation. Dr. Henner's scientific work focused on the expression of therapeutic proteins in bacterial hosts, and the development of recombinant antibody therapeutics.

Douglas E. Kelly, M.D., Director

Dr. Kelly received a BA in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from the University of California at San Diego (1983), an M.D. from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine (1988), and an MBA from Stanford University (1990). Prior to joining Alloy Ventures, he worked for two European venture capital firms, as well as for Ligand Pharmaceuticals, and as an independent consultant. He is currently a director of Adiana, Arbor Surgical, BARRx, Favrille, Integrated Biosystems, KaloBios, Novasys, Novocell, and Pharsight. Dr. Kelly also teaches a class at Stanford University, "Business 16; Financing The Start-up."

Brigitte Smith, Director

Brigitte Smith has ten years experience in venture capital, business strategy and start-up company operations. Brigitte has been investing and managing investments for GBS’s $150m of life science specialized venture capital funds for the last seven years. Prior to joining GBS Brigitte worked in the US and Australia in operating roles with early stage technology based companies, and at Bain & Company as a strategic management consultant. Ms Smith has a Bachelor of Chemical Engineering (Honours) from the University of Melbourne, a Master of Business Administration (Honours) from the Harvard Business School and a Master of International Relations from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, both in Boston, USA. Ms Smith is also an adjunct lecturer in Entrepreneurial Finance at the Melbourne Business School. Brigitte is on the board of GBS portfolio companies, Dynamic Hearing, Kalobios, Pharmaxis Pharmaceuticals, Proacta Therapeutics, and Smart Drug Systems.

Denise M. Gilbert, Ph.D.

Dr. Gilbert is currently an independent consultant and strategic advisor to life science companies. Previously, she served as Chief Executive Officer of Entigen Corporation, a private life science information technology company. In addition, Dr. Gilbert has served as Chief Financial Officer of two public life science companies, Incyte Pharmaceuticals Inc. and Affymax NV . Dr. Gilbert started her career in biotechnology in the mid-1980’s first in venture capital and then as a senior biotechnology analyst with Smith Barney Harris & Upham and Montgomery Securities. Dr. Gilbert holds a B.A. from Cornell University and a Ph.D. in Cell and Development Biology from Harvard University .

Raymond Withy, Ph.D., Director

Dr. Withy has over twenty years experience in the biotechnology industry. He was, most recently, President and Chief Executive Officer of Abgenix, Inc until his retirement in 2004. He was also a member of the Board of Directors of Abgenix until June 2005. As one of the cofounders of Abgenix in 1996, Dr. Withy initially served as its vice-president, business development, then its Chief Business Officer and then President before becoming its CEO. Prior to the founding of Abgenix, Dr.Withy held various business development positions at Cell Genesys, Inc.. From 1991 to 1993, Dr. Withy was a consultant to the industry in the areas of business development and strategic planning. Dr. Withy held various research and development positions at Genzyme Corp and Integrated Genetics which he joined in 1984. Dr. Withy received a B.Sc. in Chemistry and Biochemistry and a Ph.D. in Biochemistry, both from the University of Nottingham, UK and was a post-doctoral research fellow at the California Institute of Technology.

David W. Pritchard, President & Chief Executive Officer

Mr. Pritchard joins KaloBios with more than 25 years of experience in general management, business development and financial management within the biopharmaceutical industry. Most recently he held the position of CBO at Rinat Neuroscience Corporation, where he managed the negotiations on the acquisition of Rinat by Pfizer in 2006 for a reported $500 million. Prior to that he was CFO at Matrix Pharmaceuticals, and managed the sale of the company to Chiron Corporation in 2002 (now Novartis). Between 1992 and 2000 David served as VP, Business Development and CFO of Metabolex, Inc. where he completed three rounds of financing and negotiated four worldwide corporate alliances with major pharmaceutical companies, and in-licensed metaglidasen. He started his biotechnology career at Triton Biosciences, Inc. as one of the founding managers, where he held various positions including heading up the sales and marketing efforts, commercial development, a business unit, and ultimately managed the sale of Triton (predominately to Schering AG, now Bayer). Triton developed Betaseron® for multiple sclerosis (2005 sales exceeded $1 billion), and Fludara® for leukemia. David holds an MBA degree from Stanford University, and a BS in Chemical Engineering from Cornell.

Geoffrey Yarranton, Ph.D., Chief Scientific Officer, Executive Vice President, Research & Development

Dr. Yarranton has over 20 years of experience in the biotechnology industry both in Europe and the US. He spent 16 years at Celltech Therapeutics in the UK where he led their research activities. During that time he led a ‘joint venture’ between Celltech and American Cyanamid (later Wyeth) that developed the first approved antibody-drug conjugate, Mylotarg. Dr. Yarranton also designed and developed the bacterially-produced PEGylated anti-TNF antibody Fab fragment (CDP870) currently in Phase III studies for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis. In 1998, Dr. Yarranton joined Coulter Pharmaceutical where he led the team that refiled the BLA for Bexxar, a radioiodinated antibody for the treatment of relapsed and refractory Non Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. Following the acquisition of Coulter Pharmaceutical by Corixa, Dr. Yarranton became site director of the South San Francisco site and joined Deltagen in May 2002 as Executive Vice President of Research and Development.
